zoning
OUR ROLE
The University Area Commission is a recommending body to the City of Columbus. The UAC hears cases concerning zoning changes, variances, signage, early demolitions, and other city matters. When necessary, City Council looks to commission votes to inform decisions that go to a council vote, but the votes of the commission are only advisory, never binding.
PROCESS
The UAC Zoning Committee hears zoning cases first, then they go before the entire commission, which decides if it will recommend passage to the city. The Zoning Committee meets the first Monday of the month unless there is a Monday holiday. The full commission meets the third Wednesday of the month.
attending a meeting
Residents are encouraged to speak at both meetings if they have opinions on the project. The Zoning Committee meetings are less formal, and the Chairman will ask if there are residents who would like to speak on the matter. However, the full Commission meetings are more formal and only 3 people may speak in support or in opposition to the project. They also must fill out speaker slips to speak. For the current Zoning Committee Agenda and to complete a speaker slip form, visit our Meetings page.
